Outline

Talk described how Jordan Sissel created an application to illustrate Halo players going online and offline around the world. The end result is an avi movie file clearly illustrating the most popular areas where Halo is played as well as the effect of day and night on activity around the globe

Implmentation

Bungie provides a map of users online which Jordan grabbed every 15mins using and added a timestamp easily with Image-Magick. Mencoder was used to create the video which is available here

Notes of Interest

  • Some cities are always online!
  • Some islands in the middle of the ocean appear - they must have terrible lag!
  • Curiously too, there is a distinct line down the centre of the USA which could be due to the use of IP addresses for location and how they are assigned or located on the map.

Suggestions/Comments/Questions

  • Compare usage with household incomes
  • Statistics are very popular in these online games. Total Kill count would be interesting - in the billions probably
  • Possible to output to FLV format? - Yes
