Community Website: San Diego Space Society
Chris described a number of different services that were combined and used to create the San Diego Space Society website, a community website. The following services were used:
- Wordpress.com (free hosted) – core base for main site
- Eventful (RSS) - events calendar
- Ma.gnolia (RSS) - hand-filtered news of interest
- WuFoo (forms) - collects and emails form results, entered into Google Docs
- Google Groups - communication between members
- Google Apps - mail for sandiegospace.org domain, shared Docs, Google Calendar for planning
- Flickr – for storing photos that show up in posts
- Timebridge (meetings then goes to calendar)
- Nourish: takes RSS feed and generates email (not plugged in yet?)
Wordpress was used for the main site. A sidebar along the right edge is used to display feeds with info such as events, etc. from the other services. Most users of site are there as readers / consumers of info. Main wordpress plug-in used is the RSS plug-in.
Other options that could be considered:
- self-hosted Wordpress - gives more plug-in flexibility
- Ning - provides social networking
- wiki - if user editing was most important
- Google Sites - very basic site editing, integrates well with Google Apps
- Blogger - also integrates well with Google Apps
- Basecamp or Campfire or Highrise (37signals)
