Session Notes

Scott Mauvais

I missed the first part of the discussion. When I arrived the group was discussion SOA v. Mashups. There was a lot of talk about the value of being able to build things quickly v. the need for robust (security, governance, supportability) apps. One person mentioned he saw a move toward “build quickly and throw away if it wasn’t right” because the investment required for a mashup was so small. We also talked about dashboards v. transactional systems.

At the end someone asked if anyone could cite a successful enterprise mashup. I mentioned the Microsoft “Oil and Gas” example from my session at Mashup U a couple days before. After Katrina, the company wanted to be able see all of their assets (ships, oil platforms, pipelines etc.) the Gulf of Mexico, the personnel assigned to each, and production information along with other proprietary information all overlaid on a map with weather data.

I can’t share the app itself because the demo is password protected (I’m working on getting a public version posted) but in the mean time, here is a screen grab from the Oil and Gas Mashup.
