At the University of California, Santa Barbara I am researching cognitive approaches to modeling environments--in other words, figuring out how to formally characterize how people move through, act in, and remember the layout of an environment like a building interior, a university quad, or a city neighborhood. My goal is to develop a variety of tools for architects, urban designers, and urban planners so that they can easily and cheaply evaluate the "user experience" of existing environments or their plans for new ones. Some of these tools rely on location-aware handheld devices as well as geographic information systems.

A related project of mine is to develop a personal tour guide: a location-aware handheld device that automatically pulls content from Wikipedia to create a guided tour for you.

Thus my interest in mashups, plus my ongoing interest in flashy Web technology. I'd be very interested to talk in person or over e-mail with anyone interested in these topics.
